What do whales have to do with changing your life?

Life is a journey. We have all heard that phrase before - it’s a bit of a cliché but absolutely true.

Making change happen in your life is a journey – not a single event.

It was on a journey to California that Andy and I decided to create our company Behaviour Works.

Andy and I both have psychology degrees, and both set out on our careers to make people’s lives better in whatever way we could using our knowledge and skills.

While we were attending a conference in California on how to change energy behaviours in organisations we took some time out to go on a whale watching trip in Monterey Bay. During this awe-inspiring trip we had the ‘aha!’ moment when we realised that we could bring the knowledge we had both been applying to help organisations to change directly to individuals (people like you) who want to change their own lives. This felt really in keeping with the path we had both set out on at the start of our careers.

The realisation that our change process would work for individuals who want to change their lives excited us (maybe even more than seeing humpback whales up close enough to smell them).

We set about creating and launching our online ‘Making Change Happen’ programme. At the heart of the process is our Whale approach. It’s called the Whale approach because when we were developing our thinking and drew it out it was shaped like a whale and the shape explained our logic.

What we ask people to think about is first of all to gain clarity and focus about the want for change at the head/eye end of the whale and work out their wishes (the why they want to change), to then to widen/flesh out their thinking, specify behaviours and identify what needs to change at the body of the whale and then take action and gain that forward strong, steady momentum or movement for change into action using the tail.

Having been so inspired by our whale watching experience and creating our own Whale approach to change we decided to find a way to give something back to these wonderful creatures that so inspired us.

That was when we found Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) and we donate £1 for every online course we sell to this wonderful charity. WDC work worldwide to protect whales and dolphins and the places they live.

Whales play an amazing role in an ecosystem that keeps every creature on Earth alive, including you!

Humans have done enormous damage to the planet that includes killing millions of whales and in some instances wiping out up to 90% of some populations.  Yet few people are aware that by helping whale populations recover its helps counter the damage humans have done. Whales play a vital role in the marine ecosystem where they help provide up to 50% of our oxygen, combat climate change and sustain fish stocks.

Best wishes
